St. Patrick Catholic School was founded in 1906 and has been providing Catholic Education to the families of the Portland area and beyond for over 100 years.  In addition to its Elementary and High School programs, the school also operates a Pre-School Program and a Full-Day Kindergarten.

St. Patrick School is unique in the Diocese of Grand Rapids, being the only pre-school through twelfth grade Catholic school which is supported by a single parish.

About Our Community

The original school was built in 1906.

Our Philosophy

"And whatever we (you) do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him."  (Colossians 3:17)

This is the foundation of the St. Patrick School Philosophy.  Our purpose is to serve as role models who are living examples of Christian values and to seek and foster the ability to see Jesus in everyone, through a spirit of respect and cooperation.

St. Patrick School provides a quality Catholic education for all.

St. Patrick families celebrated the school's 100th birthday on November 19, 2006

GOOD THINGS COME IN SMALL PACKAGES!

People are usually surprised that a high school as small as Portland St. Patrick offers such a top-notch academic program, and in fact offers more advanced placement classes than schools which are many times larger.  St. Pat’s offers AP classes in Biology, Calculus and English Literature and Composition.  Students who take these courses have the opportunity to earn college credit by taking the AP exam in May.  Studies indicate that students who take AP classes are more successful in college than those who don’t.

The National College Board requires all teachers of AP classes in the nation to submit a syllabus for approval.  All of St. Patrick AP teachers have received the endorsement.  The teachers attend AP seminars and classes on a regular basis to gain new information and techniques that assure the students will succeed.

Because of the small size of the school, teachers are easily able to work together on vertical teams to lay the groundwork for younger student so that they will be well-prepared to take AP classes when they become high school students.

Some other things that make St. Patrick School special are:

• All-Day Kindergarten: All day kindergarten allows more comprehensive exploration of the modality areas which include fine motor, gross motor, auditory/visual language skills.
• Elementary Spanish Instruction: Spanish instruction for all elementary students, taught by a qualified Spanish instructor, sets the stage for future academic success.  Beginning in Middle School, students can also take German.
• Expanded Foreign Language Classes: Spanish III and German III are offered to high school students.
• Algebra in Junior High: Pre-algebra is offered to students in the seventh grade and algebra is offered to eighth grade students.
• Laptops for Teachers: Every teacher is supplied with a laptop computer.
• High Attendance Rate: Daily attendance in both the elementary and high school is over 99%.
• Grads Going on to College:  Over 95% of our graduating seniors continue on to higher education.
